Dr. Francesco Cerritelli DO, PhD Dr Francesco Cerritelli, DO, PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Chieti-Pescara, is the President of the C.O.ME. Collaboration non-profit research foundation. Cerritelli has a broad interest in osteopathic research, in the study of neurobiological mechanisms of touch, in the study of the role of placebo in manual medicines, and the analysis of the effects of new therapies in health systems focusing on the interdisciplinary aspects of evidence-based medicine. He directs many multidisciplinary research groups in Italy and abroad to innovate and produce robust scientific evidence in complementary therapies. He has authored numerous scientific publications and monographs. Since 2005, he has been engaged in osteopathic clinical activity.
Dr. Francesco Cerritelli DO, PhD at the Congres: The nervous system as a predictive allostatic machine Although The concept of allostasis was proposed more than three decades ago, questions about its precise meaning and utility persist. The concept is discussed in light of recent research as a strategy for efficiently regulating physiology and behaviour. The brain predicts what is likely to be required by sensing the internal and external environments and consulting its database; it then computes the optimal response. The brain stimulates dopamine release in response to a better-than-predicted result, encouraging the organism to develop effective regulatory behaviours. By prioritizing behaviours and dynamically adjusting energy and nutrient flows, the brain minimizes costly errors and maximizes opportunities. Allostasis pays off despite high computational costs and is now recognized as a fundamental principle of organismal design.
