John Karemaker PhD
Dr. Karemaker has lectured Physiology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Amsterdam for over 40 years. His research is directed to the autonomic nervous system, in particular control of blood pressure via the baroreflex. He helped develop the theoretical basis for the analysis of beat-to-beat variability of heart rate and blood pressure and its relations to the underlying condition of the autonomic nervous system.

Heart rate variability, what can it tell about the autonomic nervous system and activity of the vagus nerve? When I look at my smart watch, it shows a magic number for my momentary ‘heart health’, i.e., my heart rate variability (HRV). Where does this number come from and what does it tell? Is my heart healthier when my heart rate is more variable? How is HRV measured? Is it not enough sign of a healthy heart if my heart rate (HR) is just low? How high or low a heart rate is healthy? Which influences from the central nervous system and other systems (kidney for instance) on my heart decide on HR and HRV? These are some of the questions that will be answered in this presentation. Specifically, the ‘central wiring’ of the autonomic nervous system will be reviewed and the relations between heart and respiration. In all of these matters the vagus nerve plays a crucial role. Techniques to activate this nerve are in use to evoke a multitude of effects, other than influencing HR and HRV.
